If I could keep only one piece from my wardrobe, it would be a black blazer. It has seen me through exams in Groningen, rainy bike rides along the canals and more than one candlelit dinner that ran far too late. It is the piece I reach for when I don't know what to wear, and somehow it always knows.
This season I've been styling mine in five very different ways. Here they are, from the most relaxed to the most dressed up.
1. Over a crisp white shirt
The classic. Leave the shirt slightly open, push the sleeves up a little and let your hair do the rest. Simple, sharp and made for long days.
"Dress for the dinner you hope the day ends with."
2. Head to toe monochrome
Black on black on black. A fitted top, straight trousers and pointed flats keep the silhouette clean, so the texture of the fabrics carries the look.
3. Over a slip or halter top
For evenings, I wear it over a black halter and let it slip off my shoulders. Add gold earrings and a soft red lip, and you're ready.
4. With leather and sunglasses
On grey Amsterdam days I layer it under a long coat with a structured bag and dark sunglasses. A little dramatic, entirely on purpose.
5. Belted as a dress
My favourite trick for when I travel light: a longer blazer, a thin belt and nothing else but sheer tights and heels.
